When I had only small children, I loved going to the grocery store. My kids walked along-side me and asked me what they could do to help. They didn’t ask for anything. They helped me read labels. They helped me calculate the cost of all of my groceries. They helped me sort the groceries in my cart so that they were in sections – refrigerator food, freezer food, canned food, etc. I had one child in charge of coupons and that child would move the appropriate coupons to the “Use these at checkout” envelope.
Oh gosh. I just loved grocery shopping!
Of course it only happened that way while I was sleeping… That sort of shopping trip is only a dream away – right?
Let’s get real.
About 10 years ago… when I had 5 young children, I hated grocery shopping! It was ridiculous heading to the store with all 5 children and felt counter-productive. I think I spent 25% of the time scolding the children for trying to get stuff off of the shelves (this was best done by whispering threats in their ears), 25% of the time putting the children in and pulling them out of the cart (they are such moody little creatures!), 25% of the time bribing them to stop crying, 10% of the time in the bathroom stall nursing a baby to keep them calm for another 20 minutes (and the other children either waiting right outside the stall or in the stall with me), 10% of the time chasing the “wild one” down aisle, and 5% of the time crying.
Occasionally I would leave the kids with Kyle and go in the evening, but as a busy mom, I was often too tired in the evenings to leave the house. So, in my spare time, I daydreamed about ways to make grocery shopping easier. My favorite idea I actually even shared with a grocery chain – I believe it may have been Dillons/Kroger. They thanked me and said they’d pass the idea along.
I can’t believe this hasn’t been done yet. I STILL think it’s a great idea and am just waiting for someone to implement it. I don’t NEED it so much anymore. I have older children who can watch children while I leave, but since I don’t like grocery shopping, I still think it would be the coolest thing.
So… here it is.
1. Big grocery warehouse – only for stocking not for customers to shop in, therefore it can be plain, no fancies. This will cut costs and make for good prices.
2. Online Grocery store of every item in the warehouse – varied brands, prices, sales, etc. These would be categorized by section, just like at a grocery store and would include fresh produce. (They would advertise sales on their website.)
3. You shop online checking the box next to the item you want, put quantity and then check another box if you have a coupon.
4. They ask you if you need certain items to go along with the ones you checked (good for them as it allows for impulse buying – good for you as it reminds you if you forgot something that would normally go along with the other thing – bad for you as it allows you to impulse buy, ha!)
5. You reserve your order with a credit card.
6. You schedule a time to pick it up.
7. They confirm your order and tell you if they are out of anything – if you want to replace with something else – etc.
8. They gather all of your items and then store your bags of refrigerated items in the cooler and your other bags – with your order/name on all bags.
9. You show up with your coupons. They make sure your coupons are all valid – then you pay.
10.They load your car with your groceries.
11.You cry tears of gratefulness as you drive away.
Now seriously. You can order just about anything online. Why not ALL YOUR groceries?
I know some mommies like to grocery shop alone at night just so they can refresh themselves – but just imagine if you could grocery shop by using this method and go to Starbucks with a book for some refreshment? Makes much more sense to me!
If you think this is a good idea – share this post – and you never know, maybe somebody (with money) will decide it’s a good idea and it will have all started here – with US!

I love this idea! And actually enjoy shopping this way from Sam’s Club. We live quite a ways away from Walmart and Sam’s, so cutting out an hour of shopping at Sam’s with five children in tow is a blessing
Now if the smaller stores would go this route I could cancel hours of walking around stores and go find a good park to take my kids to
I know we have talked about this before Lynnette..and I think it is a great idea! I don’t even have kids at home anymore, but I would like to shop that way too. (:>)
There may be some glitches in this kind of process…but it sounds good to me.
I think there are variations of this in other parts of the country…though maybe not as complete as you have designed
. I think you can do something like this with Sam’s, but of course that doesn’t cover your produce, etc. I don’t even have little ones and I dread the grocery shopping – I have longed to do it online (of course deliver would be nice, ha ha).
Alice.com lol not only can you shop but they deliver to your door. Now the prices…yeah, out of my budget but it does exist:)
I’ve seen Alice.com. It’s not what I have in mind. First of all, you can’t get everything you need. That’s why it would have to be local. If it’s local, and shipping isn’t required, you will be able to get things you couldn’t ship well (or cheaply), like milk, eggs, produce, etc.
What Alice.com does is brings some stuff to your door (at a high price) but then you still have to go to the store for the rest. So kind of defeats the purpose.
Have you ever ordered from Alice.com?
At first I was reading this and thinking you were some alien life form, actually liking to grocery shop with kids. Haha!! I have often thought that they should have something like this. I even thought that would be a good business – you could be like a personal shopper for moms and the elderly and they pay you so much to go do their shopping. I would totally love that! I do mine on the weekends when Morgan’s home, but it stinks cause that’s the only time I get out on the weekends cause I dont want to leave poor Morgan home all weekend by himself. Lol!
Ha! That was my goal – to make people go WHAAAA?
I hate grocery shopping too, so boring and stressful with young children. Here in Australia you can do your shopping online with our large suppermarket chains, here the largest one is called Woolworths. Don’t think it is available in country areas but certainly in cities and suburbs. They deliver to your home. Is a bit more expensive.
In our area, there are several websites that you can order your groceries on-line and they deliver them to your home at your convenience. While this is a great idea, it’s more expensive and you can’t use coupons. That’s where your idea is better : )
Yeah, I wouldn’t do it if it was more money. Savings is worth stress sometimes. ha!
When we lived in NC I would order my groceries online, go to the store, pull up into a lane with a speaker, tell them I was there and they would bring out my groceries, load them in the car, take my coupons and have the discounts available for my next order and I’d pay and go home! LOVED IT!!!!! MISS IT!!!!!!!!!
Ah really? So, why hasn’t this taken off all across the country?! There are momma’s everywhere who would LOVE that!! Must be densely populated areas??
We lived in Raleigh – so big city!!! Not really sure why it wouldn’t take off across the country, but I sure do miss it!!!!
Lynnette,
We have also a little over a year ago, started getting food from Guaranteed Foods (http://www.guaranteedfoods.com/). We get about six months worth of food (mostly meats) delivered at one time. The meat is very good. If you try it out, given them my name (Cassandra Sines) and you’ll get $100 in free food.
Cassandra, we recently moved to NC. What grocery store does this? That would be so totally awesome!!
It was Lowes Foods in Raleigh. We left there eight years ago, so I’m not sure if they still do it or not. It was AWESOME!
I am all for this! Although I am sure if it ever happened, rural Alabama would be the last place to jump on board. ;(
I’m thinking the same thing about Wichita, KS.
Love this idea!!
When my kids were littles I always thought we should have drive through pharmacies so we didn’t have to take the feverish kiddos into the store. This keeps us from sharing their germs and keeps them snuggled up in the carseat. I am so glad it is now available for mommys most places.
There should be yearly “Mom’s Meetings” with major corporations to talk about what works better for us!
Yes?
in Scotland you can do your grocery shopping online and the supermarket deliver it to your door. I’m not sure how coupon stuff works as I’ve never done it myself, but I know a lot of families who do it.
Unfortunately with the big wholesale places like Costco, or the really cheap supermarkets like Aldi and Lidl they don’t offer online shopping.
Sounds like the U.S. is a little behind in this arena. Apparently it is available some places in the U.S., but not where I live! I think this type of grocery shopping should be cheaper since there wouldn’t need for nice displays, etc. Seems like warehouse set up would make it much less expensive.
I’m from the uk, and was reading this and getting incredibly confused. Who would have thought you can’t order your groceries online in the us??!!! Here you can order your groceries on line, and have them delivered to your door at a time you desire. I presumed this was a standard thing in most developed places! Obviously I was wrong. Come on usa, you had better hurry up
Yeah, sounds like we are behind in the online grocery shopping arena! After reading some comments, it appears it is happening some places, so that’s good to know! Maybe it’ll take off and go nation-wide soon!
I think its a fab idea! I do use alice.com to get my country save detergent. They are similar but you can’t get everything and the prices can be higher.
Yeah. I noticed that with Alice.com I think when you have to ship, you have to pay more for the product.
Here, we are blessed with a lovely website called Cobornsdelivers.com
They are amazing. They deliver seven days a week, you just have to order online by 11:00pm the night before, and it forces me to be organized and meal plan! Granted, I still have to drive the 45 minutes to go to Costco twice a month (because let’s be honest, those bulk prices are still better!), but it has cut my grocery bill in half because I’m not out there impulse buying at the store!
I’ve always said that Costco should deliver. THAT would be my dream come true!
I was just telling the commenter below (Sheila) that the prices seemed sort of high. But WOW! Great to see it’s happening somewhere though! Can you use your coupons there?
Yes! You can use coupons. They also offer great specials (which most are listed on the “specials” link on their site) and have great referral offers, too (for everybody that I refer [who orders through my referral link], they get $20 off their first order AND I get $20 off my next placed order for referring them)! They only charge $5 for delivery (as long as your order is more than $50, which mine always is!), which is totally worth it for me. The nearest big grocery store is a 20 minute drive from here, add to that the fact that I have to figure out a time to go that works around all of the factors of our schedule, I’m usually distracted by whichever child(ren) I brought with me and tend to miss something on my list … it’s just stressful!
Plus, I don’t have to be here when they drop the groceries off, which is a HUGE bonus!
LUCKY! Tell them to set up business in my neck of the woods!!!
Oh … I forgot to mention – their prices are competitive for the quality of items that you get from them. Produce and stuff is a little higher, but it’s always amazing (plus, I usually buy that stuff from Costco)! Like I mentioned, it forces me to meal-plan before I make my grocery order, which actually causes me to buy less because I am not impulse buying. AND, I can shop in my pajamas from the comfort of my bed if I want!
In Minneapolis, we have Coborn’s Delivers. I’m not sure about coupons, but you can order online and they deliver the next day! I hate grocery shopping and I have tried the online a couple of times, but I just can’t do it. I need to see and touch what I’m buying. Maybe I just need to practice the online shopping more, ha!
That looks very much like I had in mind! Only the prices seem a little wild. If you could pick it up – rather than have delivery (although that would be a good “extra” for people who can’t pick them up themselves), I’m not sure why their prices couldn’t be more competitive. Ya know?
Also, it didn’t appear you could use coupons (but maybe I missed it). That would be one thing that would keep a lot of people doing this type of shopping because there are so many coupon users. Just imagine if you could sit at home in front of your computer and go through coupons and shop with them! Wouldn’t that be cool!
Thanks for sharing! Gives me hope that there are places that already do this!
Have you heard of Azure groceries? Google search.
My sister, when she lived closer she would buy most of her groceries from there (online). Then there was a “pick up day” and she would go get it. She has four little boys and they eat A LOT!
However I don’t know where they have their pick ups and if it is even close enough for you. But just thought I would put it out there. Oh yeah, and it’s organic food. We’re not “all green/go green” kind of people…it’s more for our bodies that we need it, due to health reasons
I haven’t read all of the comments (short on time, kids eating breakfast) but there are stores that do this! When I lived in CA, Safeway did it! You had to pay a fee but it would be so worth it! They did not have a place to input your coupons though I bet that could have been done at the store when you picked up your order. I also think that certain Harris Teeter stores do this.
…and that sounds heavenly. I think I would actually prefer to do my shopping and be able to drop my kids at a play area (that is supervised) within the grocery store (away from the door) while I shop. Ikea has the right idea in that regard. *sigh.
Our Hyvee charges a delivery fee, but they do offer something like this. I’ve never used it though…seriously tempted and wish they were Aldi prices! I looked over Alice.com when it first came out and realized I just do not buy that much name brand stuff. Hard for me to pay more when I know I can get it cheaper! I would imagine it won’t be long before someone perfects this since more and more is going to online business.
This is the BEST idea EVER!!! When I first started reading this post, I thought to myself – Wow! Maybe one day I’ll be a great mom like that and my child will help – because that is NOT how our trips to the grocery store look! I think this is the greatest idea ever and you should copyright it or patent it or something!
What I would give to be able to order ALL my groceries online while my child is napping or while I am standing in my kitchen! I love it! Thanks for this breath of hope… maybe someday…
Here in MD, we have peapod.com which is through Giant grocery stores. You can order online and have it delivered. Weekly sale prices apply and you can use coupons. I’m sure there is a fee for delivery but it may be worth it.
Oh my! Where do I sign you up as President of Grocery Shopping Ideas?! Many of us who are older and without children would STILL LOVE to see this implemented! With both me and Jerry now having mobility issues, we HATE having to park and walk for MILES to get ONE item or a cart full! Well, it SEEMS like miles when you have medical issues that make walking difficult across those huge stores. I would be more than happy to pick up my groceries without all the rest of the physical hassle!
You so smart, Lynnette! ♥
Lynette here in the UK we are able to do this, it is great.
I pay £10 a month ($12 I think) and I can order my groceries from a warehouse called Ocado. I order online, I can use coupons and compare brands and prices. I can buy all food and groceries and other useful things – last week I ordered a new broom and some greetings cards. Its delivered to my door at a time I choose. I can have as many deliveries as I like for that price. They carry the goods in for me and recycle the bags from last time.Everything is superb quality and if ever they get anything wrong they are quick to put it right.
I hate shopping with my kids nearly as much as they do and this service is wonderful. Hope you get something similar in your area soon!
In Seattle we had Amazon Fresh, who would deliver right to your door, but as far as I know that’s limited to that region. Here (we live in Switzerland now) the stores generally close at 6pm, so no late night shopping! although some of the stores in nearby France stay open as late as 8pm! Ha! We sure do miss our 24/7 stores.
Hi Lynette,
I just wanted to let you know that I linked you up with my Random 11 blog post today. I really hope you are able to join in with the fun.

You had me fooled Lynnette! I was starting to feel really bad that my grocery shopping children where not nearly as angelic as yours
I can TOTALLY relate to the reality though! oh my goodness. The “wild one”, the escape artist, the one obsessed with candy, the one who skips and walks into other costumers,…..the hissing of threats into little ears. haha! I love grocery shopping alone. It’s my favorite kind of shopping…but it doesn’t happen very often at all.
I love this post. I have to laugh. Because I can totally relate. But didnt you ever get rude remarks from some other people even when all your kids behaved. Like “Are those all yours” ” Didn’t you know how to keep your legs cross” and “wheres the father are you on welfare” that last remark I almost told the woman “He’s serving his country protecting you fool” I know I know I got so sick of those remarks it was all the time oh and “Dont you know what caused it” ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I could scream Thank you Jesus for having me fruitful and multiplyable lol
